I have heard many times while in college, "If you can manage a classroom, you can teach the children. Managment is half of the battle." My strongest point as a teacher was my classroom managment skills. These experiences have caused me much thought as Joe and I try to raise our children God's way. God lets us make our own mistakes and learn from them with unconditional love. I claim no expertise in the parenting area, I only have a two year old and a 5 month old. I have found a book, though, that suports the idea to "let them learn" (as seen in a recent Ensign issue). It is by Foster Cline MD and Jim Fay, a long time educator.
The name of the book is Parenting with Love and Logic, Teaching Children Responsibility. I have found the principles in this book to be of great worth. It states that many of us are frustrated with our children's actions whatever they may be-not listening to us, talking back, not doing what we ask, unpleasent dinner times, bed times, schoolwork, public scenes, you name it, they talk about it. Whatever the age of the child, it teaches parents how to hand the problem back to the child to take care of it, grow in responsibility, and put the fun back in parenting!! It is a blessing in our lives, it wouldn't be fair if I didn't share it with others. Worth a read! The 2006 edition.
